Unless you’re living under a rock or you’re not active on any social media, you probably know that Nigeria’s favorite couple Banky and Adesuwa had their traditional wedding yesterday.
Out of curiosity, I looked through the social media numbers for the hashtag and they were staggering; 55 million impressions at last count.
The numbers got me thinking, we can never really seem to agree on the standards that make for a good relationship on Nigerian social media. Instead we’re constantly at odds, daggers drawn waiting to pounce on anyone whose logic does not agree with our rhetoric.
For a generation so angry and unhappy, why then are we so thrilled at Banky and Adesua’s wedding? My take is that we’re all hypocrites. We say one thing, but inwardly desire another thing.
Deep down, despite our tweets and angry disposition, a lot of us want to get married to the right person and live happy lives. Reading some posts, one would believe that this wasn’t true and that a lot of us are doomed to singleness.
I’ll admit that I don’t know too much about the couple, but the feat they have pulled off in an industry that doesn’t have a good record with relationships in general is amazing. No scandals, no drama, no noisemaking, just love; and we all love them for it.
I don’t think that fifty five million people just wanted to stay abreast of the wedding of the year. I think a good number of those numbers are actually happy for the couple.
I don’t think we will ever completely agree on some of these principles that seem to cause so much fierce debate, but I think a lot of us just want to be happy at the end of the day, no matter the cost. Issues like finances, submission, cooking etc take a back burner.
I think Adesuwa and Banky have showed us what love, happiness and sacrifice look like, and it looks amazing.
Find the happiness that works for you and live your life free of all the BS!
The force be with you!
